How rates work

The advertised rate is not what you pay.

Three things decide your actual bill. Check them in this order and most bad plans rule themselves out.

01

The unit rate, at your usage

Many plans quote a rate that only applies above a certain monthly usage. Below it, you pay more per unit than advertised. Check the rate at the amount you actually use.

02

The standing charge

A daily fee you pay whether you use power or not. A low unit rate with a high standing charge can cost more than the reverse if your usage is small.

03

The exit fee and the end date

Fixed plans roll onto a default rate when they end, usually a worse one. Note the date and the cost of leaving early before you sign.

Common questions

How this site works.

The short answers are below. Read the full FAQ or see our editorial policy for how plans are ranked.

Is the comparison really independent?

The ordering is by rate, term or renewable share — whichever you pick — and never by what a supplier pays us. We earn a commission on some switches, which funds the site. Any plan that pays us nothing still appears in the same list, sorted the same way.

Do you need my personal details?

No. A postcode is enough to show what's available. Nothing is stored, and no supplier receives your details unless you choose to go through to them.

Are these rates guaranteed?

No. Rates change often and the supplier's own terms always take precedence. Treat every figure here as a starting point to check on the supplier's site before you sign.

What can the guide not help with?

It won't diagnose a wiring fault, settle a billing dispute, or promise you a price. For those, you need a licensed electrician, your supplier's complaints process, or a written quote.

About

Who runs this and how it stays honest.

Energy In My Area is an independent comparison desk. We don't supply energy, we don't own a supplier, and we don't sell your details to anyone.

What we do

We collect the plans available at a given address and show them on one screen with the numbers that decide your bill: the unit rate, the contract length, and the cost of leaving early. Then a guide answers your questions about them in plain language, without collecting anything about you.

How we make money

Some suppliers pay us a commission when a customer switches through our links. That funds the site. It has two hard limits: it never changes the price you're offered, and it never changes the order plans appear in. Plans from suppliers who pay us nothing sit in the same list, sorted by whichever measure you chose.

If we ever cannot show a plan because a supplier withholds its data, we say so on the results rather than quietly leaving it out.

Where the numbers come from

Rates are gathered from published supplier tariffs and refreshed on a schedule. Energy prices move often, so treat every figure here as a starting point and confirm it with the supplier before you sign anything.

Terms of service

The terms of using this site.

Template. Sensible starting terms for a comparison site. Have a lawyer adapt them before you publish.

What this site is

An information and comparison service. We are not an energy supplier, a broker acting for you, or a licensed adviser. Nothing here is a contract, a quote, or financial advice.

Accuracy

Rates, terms and availability change frequently and are provided without warranty of any kind. The supplier's own published terms always take precedence over anything shown here. Confirm every figure before you commit.

The guide

Answers are generated by an AI model and can be wrong or incomplete. Treat them as a starting point, not a decision. Don't rely on the guide for legal, financial, or electrical safety decisions.
